The First Marsh Marigold of Spring

Photo by Sandi Nordic via Unsplash

The first marsh marigold of spring

opens its golden cup, damp with dew

sunlight filling it so it glows

its openness an invitation

to a feast for pollinators.

Soon more marsh marigolds open

(or is it I that begins to open?)

nestled amongst the indigo of bluebells,

the buttercream of Dutchman’s breeches,

the bright fuchsia of spring beauties,

and the patterned emerald of toadshade leaves.

All these little drops of color

like flecks from a painter’s palette

and my heart hums along with the bees’ wings,

a feast for me as well.
